New Figures Show Need for Limit on Caffeine in Alcohol
Scottish Labour's Jackie Baillie has renewed her call for a legal limit on the level of caffeine in alcohol following the publication of revised figures from Strathclyde Police showing that Buckfast has been mentioned in nearly 6,000 crime reports over the past three years. Labour has asked the Alcohol Commission chaired by Professor Sally Brown to consider proposals for a legal limit on the amount of caffeine that can be contained in alcoholic drinks. Denmark, Iceland and Norway have all imposed a legal limit of 150 mg of caffeine per litre in alcoholic drinks and the US Food and Drink Administration announced in November that it is also considering a ban. Shadow Health Secretary Jackie Baillie said, "I believe that the risks involved in consuming caffeinated alcohol are so great that the Scottish Government must take action. These figures from Strathclyde Police suggest a clear link between caffeinated alcohol and crime and disorder. "That's why I have asked Labour's Alcohol Commission to examine the best way of imposing a legal limit on the level of caffeine in alcoholic drinks, alongside a series of other measures to tackle Scotland's problem with alcohol abuse. "There can be no sensible reason to sell caffeinated alcohol, there is a growing body of evidence that shows its dangerous effects and some countries, including Denmark and Norway, have already removed it from the market."
