Baillie Disappointed With Decision To Cut Traffic Police In Dumbarton

Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie has expressed her disappointment with the decision by Strathclyde Police to axe its traffic cop division in Dumbarton and is concerned that this may have an impact on road safety in the area.

Strathclyde Police announced last week that it was cutting traffic police divisions in Dumbarton, Motherwell and Ayr and relocating patrols to local divisions.

The decision to cut the traffic police division in Dumbarton comes as Strathclyde Police are struggling with budget cuts from the SNP Government. Chief Constable Stephen House confirmed plans to axe 400 officers and 600 of its 2700 civilian staff this month in an effort to save £45 million.

Jackie believes that less traffic patrol cars on our streets will only lead to increased levels of dangerous driving.

She said;

"The news that Strathclyde Police is cutting the traffic police division in Dumbarton is quite concerning but unfortunately not surprising. Strathclyde Police are struggling desperately with budget constraints and are having to make cutbacks across the board. The SNP Government are doing nothing to help struggling police forces across the country.

"Anyone who lives locally knows that certain roads such as the A82 are prone to accidents and road traffic incidents. The presence of traffic police is vital to prevent high levels of dangerous driving."
